Cranberry Valley seeks Chatham members

The town of Harwich is charting a new course to try and pump up numbers at its municipal golf course: chatting with Chatham.

And at the Chatham selectmen’s meeting last Tuesday, Chatham officials decided they were willing to tee off a couple of ideas under the umbrella of regionalization.

Selectman Sean Summers, who has been known to knock the little white ball around on occasion, brought the idea up saying folks in Harwich had approached him.

He told the board that initial discussion had focused around how the town courses could be managed jointly, but since Chatham’s Seaside Links is leased to a management group whereas Harwich’s Cranberry Valley Golf Course has its own golf director, that was “too complicated.”

So, Summers said, the thought was to set up a joint committee to discuss whether there are any opportunities to work together. The suggestion posed that made the most sense so far is that Chatham residents get to play in Harwich at the residents’ rate and vice versa. For Chatham residents, that would be a $300 savings at the 18-hole golf course that was recently rated “excellent” by Zagat Golf Guide. Harwich folks would have the opportunity to enjoy nine holes and become members at Seaside, rather than pay the daily rate, around $20.

“I think what we will be looking for is opportunities like that,” said Summers.

Selectmen didn’t pick members of the committee, but agreed to form one with three members, one from the golf advisory committee, one at-large member and one selectman.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Selectman David Whitcomb.

Town Manager Jill Goldsmith said she had spoken with her counterpart in Harwich, James Merriam, and officials there are looking forward to the partnership.

“They are very excited,” she said.

Most courses on the Cape have been struggling, to varying degrees, since the economy took a slice from the ranks of golf enthusiasts. Brewster’s Captains Course has initiated special twilight rates and three-months-free memberships to increase its golf revenue, which has declined in recent years. The steady aging of the Cape’s population hasn’t helped matters either for the golf business.

Although no one in Chatham said so, Seaside Links compared to Cranberry Valley is like putting Mark O’Meara side by side with Phil Mickelson. O’Meara isn’t on par with the Hall of Famer.

The trip was disguised as a “morning jog” and when Kate asked her sister to come along, Craig had to kindly ask her to stay at home. “The trip to the top, with the ring box hidden in his shorts, was not particularly comfortable but Kate didn’t notice a thing and was just determined to get to the top!” Location of wedding: The couple wed at Kohi Point Lookout in Whakatane, Bay of Plenty. Describe your wedding day: “WET WET WET! After days and days of studying the weather forecast, the afternoon of the 7th of January turned out to be very wet – as predicted! We were both determined to go ahead with our planned outdoor ceremony at Kohi Point, which has stunning views of Whale Island.  We refused to let the rain dampen our spirits, and after some emergency umbrella purchases, the bridal party was all set to go. It was a wonderful day, full of family and friends – and we loved every minute.” The dress: “All the girls’ dresses were made by Annie McCreary – Kate’s mum! An impressive feat as Kate lives in Australia and was only available for fittings two weeks before the wedding. The dresses were made from silk and survived the rain remarkably well!” The flowers: The lovely flowers were supplied by Amanda Melville, of Flower Devas in Whakatane. “Amanda did a fantastic job of interpreting exactly what Kate wanted and also set up all the flowers at Ohope Golf club for the reception.” Highlight of the wedding: “Cruising around on our Vespa scooters – which are a big part of our lives and a passion for us both. We had a ball riding around for the photographer and also arriving at the reception on the scooters, where all of our guests braved the rain for a final time to welcome us as the new Mr and Mrs Petersen.” Was there any drama? “A fire alarm at the location where the girls were dressing caused some panic as Kate was getting her nails done downstairs and could hear the alarm but could do nothing to rescue the dresses! Luckily Kate was assured everything was okay when an apologetic builder came over to explain that he had set it off while using a sanding machine and the girls were able to return to the apartment and get ready.” The honeymoon: “Two and a half weeks in South Africa, where Craig was born and most of his extended family still live. The trip will include a four-day visit to the Kruger National Park and two weeks in beautiful Cape Town.”   Your photographer and favourite photo? Norfolk couple’s quirky cards become family tradition

Picture this: For some reason or other, Daniel Ross and his new girlfriend, April, decided in 2001 to make a goofy Christmas card featuring the two of them re-enacting a famous scene.

They chose "American Gothic," did some thrift-store shopping to find overalls and what Ross calls a frumpy dress, set the camera on a tripod or something, took the picture themselves and had it made into a card.

To say the least, it went over well with family and friends.

So in 2002, he borrowed an old Navy uniform, April secured a nurse’s white dress, hat, hose and shoes, and they went to Times Square to re-enact the V-J Day kiss immortalized in Life magazine in 1945.

A little crowd of spectators watched as a city worker stopped installing a Christmas tree long enough to snap the picture for them.

Daniel, who goes by Ross, and April were justifiably proud of that one. A trend was born.

In subsequent years they have posed as the poster art from "The Graduate" (April’s leg and Ross as Dustin Hoffman), as Rhett and Scarlett from "Gone With the Wind," as the Three Stooges in their famous golfing pose (they included a friend in the photo that year), and as a dancing couple on a windswept beach (Ocean View) from the Vettriano painting "The Singing Butler," with a couple of friends dressed as housemaid and butler, holding umbrellas.

One year they did the Rolling Stone cover of Yoko Ono and John Lennon. April wore a black shirt and jeans and Ross wore a lot less – a whole lot less – but they were married by then. That card went only to a few open-minded friends.

Another year they did the "From Here to Eternity" beach scene (remember Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr?), which Ross recalls involving cold water lapping up their skirts, as he put it.

This year April spent a lot of time creating costumes so they could pose as the duo in Gustav Klimt’s painting "The Kiss." The Norfolk couple sent that card to about 150 lucky recipients.

"You can’t afford to buy all your friends a hundred-dollar gift," Ross pointed out. By sending such a card, "they know you put some effort into it."

Ross is thoughtful that way, and in this way, too – having the story of the cards in the newspaper is a Christmas surprise for April.
