The lofted wedge chip shot is extremely difficult for most amateurs and at times even gives the pros challenges. There are basically three things during the chip shot that makes this type of shot so difficult to execute properly with accuracy and distance control. Besides keeping the upper body/spine stable (in its original position at address) until contact is made with the ball, there are two other important elements that are critical to a well-played lofted wedge shot. One of those elements is the proper shoulder turn and the other is a deliberate, although somewhat awkward in the beginning, wrist release.
As with all clubs in golf and especially when handling a lofted wedge, feel is the most important aspect of the short game. The importance of feel in the short game can’t be over emphasized because it is so important to be successful. You must be able to separate how the shoulders feel when they are turned around the spine, and have a separate feel of the upper body as the upper body/spine unit must remain stable throughout the swing.
It tends to be easier to make a proper shoulder turn with the longer clubs than with the lofted wedge. There is a tendency to move the left shoulder (for a right-handed golfer) from left to right causing a slight swaying motion as opposed to the correct should turn which is an around-the-spine/downward rotation. Addressing the ball properly puts the left shoulder above the right shoulder with the spine at an angle from left to right. In order for the shoulder to turn around the spine, the left shoulder must begin turning toward the ball and then toward the rear making an around (the spine) and down motion which until it is practiced extensively feels very awkward. It is too easy to stop rotating around the spine and begin a motion that starts from the left but instead of going downward to the right detours and moves right and doesn’t complete the downward portion of the shoulders movement. This change in swing direction tends to cause a sway that moves you off the ball and usually causes a fat shot or a pull to the left and possibly a sculled hit. There is no question that the proper shoulder turn on a lofted wedge shot is awkward for the amateur which leads to many fat shots and other types of poor contact with the ball. Because of this, many amateurs try to putt from lies where a lofted wedge is the proper club and greatly reduce their odds for success in getting up and down.
Once the proper shoulder turn has been mastered (Well, hopefully a reasonable measure of success has been achieved.), the next critical aspect of the lofted wedge shot is the wrist release. Many amateurs actually don’t understand how to release the club properly. I have read a number of golf instruction articles on the release of the club and the ones I think best describe it are the ones that refer to the movement as similar to casting a fishing rod. If you imagine you have a fishing pole in your hand and attempt to cast it, notice how your wrist releases. The back of the wrist is in line with the back of your forearm. You may have heard the famous Ben Hogan use of the term pronation and/or supination, but I’m not going to get into that. Suffice it to say, that there will be movement of the left forearm during the backswing. Turning the forearm clockwise during the downswing gets you into the proper position to be able to release the wrist into the ball. In order to get into the proper wrist release position, you may have to practice getting the forearm and left wrist (for right-handed golfers) into the correct position with the back of the forearm and the back of the wrist into alignment and being on a closely similar plane. In the beginning, this positioning may feel very awkward, but after practice you should see significant improvement in your chipping. However, you must remember to swing back slowly and not be tense which is difficult when you are learning something new.
All of the major equipment manufacturers including Mizuno, Cleveland Golf, Taylor Made, Direct Golf, Ping Golf, and Adams Golf offer numerous styles, lofts, and designs of wedges. In my opinion, it’s more important to choose a wedge that feels good to you and that you like the look of than to purchase a club that may be the latest, greatest wedge.

I have to assume that your lower body movements are supportive of the upper body as this area of the swing is not part of this article.
Many, not all, but many golfers struggle to decide what clubs best fit their bag. The answer is that it depends on your ability and what kind of course you’re playing that day. Here are some tips.
1. Get fit for clubs- After getting fit for my golf clubs, I discovered my current clubs were 3 degree too flat This means I had to make compensations in my swing to make the ball go straight consistently. Think of all the time you may waste ‘correcting’ a bad swing when it may be your clubs
2. Replace long irons (4, maybe even 5, and up) with hybrid clubs. Unless you have a low single digit handicap, your swing is probably not consistent enough to hit long irons very well. Hybrids have the added benefit of getting up in the air rather quickly (and thus, landing softly) and helping you to chop through rough or fairway fringe more efficiently.
3. Add a wedge. I am surprised at how few golfers carry enough wedges. Invariably, the better golfers carry 3-4 wedges. These wedges (probably a PW, GW, SW, and LW) give a golfer a multitude of options around the green and inside 100 yards. 70% of your results will happen within this range, so be wise and get another wedge. (If pressed to choose 1, get the 60 degree wedge with low bounce)
4. If possible, find out the type of sand at the course. Although I hope you avoid the sand, often it is impossible. The think sole of a sand wedge with a lot of bounce will cut through fine sand better. Fine sand will cause the ball to sit in a ‘fried egg’ lie and thus will be difficult to cut under like a normal sand shot.
5. Check your driver loft. Many golfers have drivers with loft that is too low. Studies show that a higher launch often yields more in the way of distance. Unless you have a low single digit handicap, avoid drivers with less than 9.5 degrees of loft. This will have the added benefit of carrying the ball farther on the off chance you miss hit into the rough. Better to be closer to the hole, right?
6. Choose a putter- many people have several different putters. I think putting is mostly mental, so I would go with the one that feels that best that day. It’s as simple as that. You will have more confidence and putt better. My better putting days are invariably those where I just feel on.

The first thing that you need to do is make sure that your backswing is correct. When you turn away from the ball you should have the feeling that you are taking the club away low and slow. This will help you set the club correctly at the top of the backswing making the next move much easier.
In order to stop pulling the golf ball with your irons you must start your downswing by rotating your hips toward your target. This allows your shoulders, arms, and hands to fall into the slot position on the downswing, which is how professional golfers hit consistent iron shots.
Even though most golfers believe their problem occurs at impact, it really occurs much earlier than that. If you can correct this over the top move in your swing and start your downswing by rotating your hips toward the target you will cure your pulled iron shots.

Tee shots: Let’s say you pull out the big dog – the driver and you are setting up. Go through your process/routine and then take a quick look at your stance/positioning of the ball.
Is the ball settled directly across from the inner heel of your front foot? If not, this is where it should be. Personally, I’ve never hit a good shot when the ball was placed anywhere but here on my tee shots.
Next, after you have hit a monster drive because you set up properly, you will perhaps have an iron shot into the green. Fairway woods will follow the same guidelines as the driver by the way.
If you are hitting a 5 or even 6 iron down to the 2 or 3, you’ll want to stay consistent with what we described for the driver. Inner heel. This is for your standard shot.
If you want to hit the ball with a lower trajectory or under a tree or something that alters your shot, you’ll want to position the ball back in your stance a bit. Swing a bit steeper and perhaps choke up on the club a bit for some shots. Your swing on these shots will be a bit altered, so this takes some practice to get comfortable with.
Mid irons to short irons, I recommend positioning the ball in the middle of your stance and you will be closer to the ball. This enables you to get the ball up in the air producing more back spin and control.
Half shots and chip shots can vary based on how your comfortable and how you are taught. Feel comes into play when it comes to those shots 50 yards out or so. Follow the same principles with positioning as with a full wedge shot.
Sand play finally brings in a whole new set of stances. I have learned a number of ways to play out of the bunker including opening my stance completely and leaning my body forward. I’ve also tried to put the ball near the front of my stance and make a smoother motion, but full swing through. This is one area that I try to stay out of. Although I love the beach, that doesn’t ring true in golf.
These are just some simple tips on how to position the golf ball for the various clubs you’ll use during your round. Hope they help you remember to pay attention each time you step up to the ball.

But you do not have to worry about that because it is easy to explain and even easier to make the adjustments. So here is what you have to do.
First The Flight Control Technology (FCT)
Making the adjustments on the TaylorMade R11 is pretty easy. For the FTC you unscrew the bottom and remove the shaft from the club head. You then rotate the shaft and re-insert it into the head lining up the markings to your desired position. This allows you to increase or decrease the launch angle and also controls the backspin by plus or minus 1,000 rpm. The adjustments can be made in half degree increments so you can play with it until you find the most beneficial loft and backspin for you.
Next The Adjustable Sole Plate (ASP)
On the sole or bottom of the club head is a red triangular button, that is the ASP. It is what controls the angle of the face of the club and therefore the direction of the ball. You can open or close the face by 2 degrees either way with the special torque wrench provided for making all the adjustments.
Lastly Comes The Movable Weight Technology (MWT)
The MWT is the third adjustment you can make on the TaylorMade R11 and it controls the draw of the ball. It does it by the use of weights in the heel and toe of the club. Depending on your particular swing you can weight the club head to suit. For example, if you like a little more draw you simply put the heavier weight in the heel and the lighter one in the toe. You will need to play with it a little to get it just right for your swing.
