Most of the coaching texts and videos that describe the perfect golf swing mention a set stance, downswing, backswing and grip with a follow-through. Some variations are obvious owing to the changing coaching trends and techniques.

The existence of a perfect golf swing has always been debated. When you approach the debate from constraint led point of view the perfect golf swing cannot exist. The common optimal a movement that each golfer should aspire to get is but a fallacy because performances are individual specific and they fluctuate over time. There will be variations in the swing between golfers and between different swings of one golfer too. No golfer can perform the golf swing in the same identical manner.

There is a structural performer constraint when we study the variations between golfers. Example, slim and tall golfers like Faldo, Woods etc, tend to have upright swings than golfers who are short and stocky like Trevino, Perry, etc. Senior golfers tend to have short, rigid swings as compared to juniors who are more flexible.

All golfers have to drive, chip and putt, thus putting a constraint on the tolerance to variability in golf. There cannot be consistency between golfers and if we say it exists then it does not imply that a common standard for optimal movement exists. It would amount to say that most people look the same as they have two eyes, mouth and nose.

The major influences in the golf swing are psychological and physiological state of the golfer or a combination of the two. A swing that is used to strike a golf ball with a driver on a practice range is evidently different from the swing used to strike over water an iron shot at a major international trophy in front of a huge audience.

Golfer today are taking help of various softwares and some other new aids to identify their flaws and improve their scores. When a golfer attempts to satisfy specific tasks, the golf swing varies and this influences the course of the swing.
